MSF Approved Basic Rider Course

TO PASS THE COURSE

WMA-Student Agreement Form

The Basic Rider Course is a pass or fail course. In order to pass the Basic Rider Course (BRC), students must: 1. Attend and participate in the classroom and riding session in its entirety.  2. Pass a written knowledge test at the end of the classroom session.  3. Pass a riding skills evaluation at the end of Range 2.1 After passing the BRC, students earn a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider Course completion card after Range 2.  Within ten business days via U.S. Postal Service, WMA sends to all successful students a State of California DMV DL 389 Certificate, which waives the riding test at the DMV. Students must pass the DMV written test to secure an M1 endorsement to their driverÕs license.  1 The classroom and riding range instruction is presented in English. Students who do not understand English, or for whom English is a second language, may bring an interpreter at their own expense to the classroom and riding range sessions.

Students must attend the classroom and riding sessions on time and participate. The most successful participants are those who listen carefully, follow directions, and have the ability to ride a bicycle. Anyone who fails to attend (or arrives late to) the confirmed classroom or riding sessions will be subject to completing the BRC on a stand-by basis within 90 days of the original reservation date. The BRC course registration fee does not include course change fees or reschedule fees.

WRITTEN KNOWLEDGE TEST: Students must attend a five-hour CLASSROOM and pass a 50-question, multiple-choice test. A minimum score of 80% is required to pass. Students have only two opportunities to pass the written test:  the first at the conclusion of the classroom, and the second within 90 days of the classroom date.

RIDING SKILLS EVALUATION:  Students must attend and pass 2 five-hour RIDING RANGE sessions and pass a riding skills test.  Students have only two opportunities to pass the riding test: first, at the end of Range 2; and the second within 90 days of classroom.

STUDENTS WHO SELF-DROP or ARE COUNSELED OUT :  The BRC is designed for novice riders with no motorcycle experience. Students must meet the objective of each riding exercise before continuing to the next.  A student may elect to self-drop at any time or a RiderCoach may counsel out a student during a riding session if a student fails to meet the safety objective of a riding exercise or when the studentÕs safety, or the safety of others, becomes an issue.  Self-drop and counseled-out students can return on a different day to repeat the riding as stand-by riders only.  Students have 90 days from the class start date to complete the entire course. Any student who was a no show to their original riding dates, gets into a second course as a standby and is self dropped or counseled out will be assessed a $50 fee if they choose to come back as a standby and may get into a third class.

STAND-BY POLICY:  Students who arrive late or fail to attend the classroom or riding may complete the BRC on a standby basis, subject to a $50 course change fee. There is NO grace period for tardiness at the riding range and a stand-by rider often takes the place of a tardy (or no-show) registered rider. Check in with a RiderCoach 15 minutes prior to the riding-class start time. A stand-by rider who gets into Range 1 and successfully completes all Range 1 exercises is automatically confirmed for Range 2 at the same time the following day. WMA cannot guarantee that stand-by riders will get into any riding range session within the 90 day grace period.

WEATHER:  Students must arrive on time at the riding range, even when rain is in the forecast.  Riding will take place during inclement weather unless or until RiderCoaches determine the conditions to be unsafe.  If or when the RiderCoaches determine that the studentsÕ environment is unsafe due to weather conditions, the class will be suspended and students will be sent home.

SAFETY ISSUES:  WMA encourages all students who are pregnant (or may be pregnant) to obtain a note from their doctor stating that their participation in the BRC is medically safe. Medical clearance must be reported to WMA prior to any riding session, or else the student assumes all risks and releases WMA from all liability. WMA encourages all students who may have short-term injuries (e.g. sprained ankles, wrists or broken bones) to enroll in the Basic Riding Course after they heal completely.

REGISTRATION POLICY:  The BRC tuition does NOT include re-scheduling or course changes. Registration is not transferrable. Students who fail to appear, arrive late (even one minute) or show up inappropriately attired for a riding session may repeat a riding session on a stand-by basis within 90 days from the class start date. To reschedule confirmed dates, students must re-enroll online at the full tuition rate.
There are no course refunds for any reason.
