WMA-Student Agreement
The Basic Rider Course (BRC) is a pass or fail course. Often, the most successful participants are those who are able to listen to and follow directions. In order to pass the BRC, students must: 1. Attend and participate in the classroom and riding session in its entirety. 2. Pass the written knowledge test at the end of the classroom session. 3. Pass the riding-skills evaluations at the end of Range 2. Upon passing the BRC, students earn a Motorcycle Safety Foundation BRC completion card. Within ten business days via U.S. Postal Service, WMA sends to all successful students a State of California DMV DL 389 certificate, which waives the riding test at the DMV. All licensing takes place at the DMV. . Please note: The classroom and riding range instruction is presented in English. Students who do not understand English, or for whom English is a second language, may bring an interpreter at their own expense to the classroom and riding range sessions.
WRITTEN KNOWLEDGE TEST: Students must attend a five-hour classroom and pass a 50-question, multiple-choice test. Students have two opportunities to pass the written test: first, at the conclusion of the classroom; second, within 90 days of the classroom date.
RIDING SKILLS EVALUATION: Students must attend two 5-hour riding range sessions and pass a riding-skills evaluation. Students have only two opportunities to pass the riding test: first, at the scheduled riding range weekend; second, within 90 days of their class start date.
STUDENTS WHO SELF-DROP or WHO ARE COUNSELED OUT: The BRC is designed for novice riders with no motorcycle experience. Students must meet the objective of each riding exercise before continuing to the next. A student may elect to self-drop or a RiderCoach may counsel out a participant if a student fails to meet the safety objective of a riding exercise or when the student’s safety, or the safety of others, becomes an issue. Self-dropped and counseled-out students are extended one second attempt to complete the riding course for free on a standby basis. Students have 90 days from the class start date to complete the entire course.
NO SHOW and STAND-BY POLICY: Any student who arrives late or fails to attend the classroom or riding may complete the BRC one additional time, for free, on a standby basis only. Any student who is a no show for their original riding dates and gets in as a stand-by rider on a second weekend date is not eligible to for a third attempt if they self drop or are counseled out. There is NO grace period for tardiness at the range. Stand-by riders are eligible to get into a riding session when a registered rider arrives late or is a no-show. If there is more than one standby student attempting to get into a riding session, a lottery style drawing will determine the order standby riders may be assigned into a riding class. Standby riders must check in with a RiderCoach 15 minutes prior to the Range 1 start time. A stand-by rider who gets into Range 1 (and passes Range 1) is automatically confirmed for Range 2 at the same time the next day. WMA cannot guarantee that stand-by riders will get into any riding range session within the 90-day grace period. There is no standby option for Range 2; any student who passes Range 1 and is late or a no show for Range 2 must pay a $100 course change fee.
WEATHER: Students must arrive on time at the range, even when rain is in the forecast. Riding will take place during inclement weather unless a RiderCoach determines the conditions to be unsafe. If a class is cancelled due to weather conditions, the class will be suspended and students will be rescheduled by WMA.
SAFETY ISSUES: Any student who is pregnant (or may be pregnant) must present a note from her doctor stating that said student’s participation in the BRC is medically safe. Medical clearance must be reported to WMA prior to any riding session; if WMA is not properly notified, the student assumes all risks and releases WMA from all liability. WMA encourages all students who may have short-term injuries (e.g. sprained ankles, wrists or broken bones) to enroll in the BRC after they heal completely.
REGISTRATION POLICY: The BRC tuition does not provide for re-scheduling or course changes. Registration is not transferable. Any student who fails to appear, arrives late (even one minute) or shows up inappropriately attired for a riding session may repeat a riding session one time only on a stand-by basis within 90 days from the classroom start date. There are no course refunds for any reason.
